MySQL Camp FAQ

What is MySQL Camp?

MySQL Camp is an unconference in the style of a BarCamp. Anyone who uses, develops, administers, writes about, or is generally interested in MySQL is more than welcome and encouraged to attend.

What's the difference between a conference and an unconference?

An unconference is different from a normal conference in a number of important ways. Attendees of an unconference are expected and encouraged to participate in the camp sessions. The purpose of the unconference is to incubate fresh ideas, to allow like-minded individuals to network with each other and share ideas, and to promote learning by doing and showing others versus a typical conference "speaking at you" style of learning.

In addition, a normal conference typically involves vendors who sponsor the conference by buying space in an exhibit hall. An unconference, while still having sponsors, relies on sponsors to decide their level of involvement.

Finally, an unconference is organized by the participants themselves, rather than a conference organization or committee.

When is MySQL Camp?

The first MySQL Camp is from November 10th through 12th, 2006.

Where is MySQL Camp?

The first MySQL Camp is at Google Headquarters (the Googleplex), located at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, California

Do I Have to Lead a Session?

No! No one is required to lead a session. What is expected is that you participate to the best of your ability, and share ideas and discuss issues. If you are passionate or experienced about a particular topic, feel free to create a session if you want.

If I Want to Lead a Session, What Should I Do?

You can either edit the SessionSchedule page and pick a room and time slot, or you can write your session on the big whiteboard which will be outside the Kiev conference room. Either way is fine, though putting your session on the wiki helps others to best notice your session!

Is There Food At Camp?

Yes! Google has graciously catered the event. There will be lunch served as well as snacks. Dinner is not served, however, so campers are encouraged to mingle with each other and go in groups to local restaurants.
